T'ai Chi Ch'uan (pronounced tie jee chwan) has gained a reputation for being a slow, relaxing
form of exercise and meditation. Regular T'ai Chi practice improves your health and quality of life. As demonstrated in numerous scientific studies, T'ai Chi Ch'uan practice can improve balance, increase lower body strength, reduce blood pressure, increase bone density, promote deeper, more relaxed breathing, and improve joint strength and flexibility.
And T'ai Chi Ch'uan has so much more to offer! With correct T'ai Chi Ch'uan instruction and practice, you will improve your posture and increase your body awareness. This will translate into a better way to use your body to avoid injury in everyday activities. You can use T'ai Chi when you're shoveling snow, lifting heavy objects, paddling a canoe, or even just walking. This increased awareness of your body and the resulting confidence can even extend greater self-confidence overall.
One thing that many people are unaware of is that T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a martial art. Many schools teach only the health and meditation aspects of this art, and these are very beneficial to everyone. But every posture of the original Yang Style Long Form has self-defense applications. These require years to learn properly, because the student must learn softness, smoothness, sensitivity, and correct structure to develop the speed and power inherent in T'ai Chi Ch'uan. Even though it takes time and patience to learn T'ai Chi for self-defense, you will discover a bottomless well of whole-life benefits on that journey!
